Aberdeen City Local Plan
The 2099 objections to this Aberdeen City Local Plan, called 'Green Spaces | New Places' are behind us (Sept 2004) and the campaign to save the Greenbelt will now continue with the next step: a City Local Plan Inquiry. Because of the large number of objections, this Inquiry has been delayed and has now started on 21 Feb 2006.
The 'Green Spaces | New Places' Plan considers various options for housing in the Greenbelt. You may wish to compare the two maps below.
The first map shows the city and its surrounding Greenbelt. The planners have divided the Greenbelt into Greenbelt [proper], the smallest part (light green), and, so called Green Space Network, the largest part (dark green stippled). The Green Space term appears to be an attempt to escape from the strict legal protection awarded to the Greenbelt by legal means.
Each map can be enlarged by clicking on it.
The second map (below), which features in the somewhat obscure Technical Appendices of the Local Plan,
shows an example of maximum housing development to the east of Kingswells.
Careful comparison of the two maps reveals an alarming truth:
Despite the fact, that the previous Local Plan was withdrawn after 3000 objections, barely 2 years ago, the planners are simply dealing a slight of hand by showing, that they are willing to even consider the same maximum development scenario’s, as in the withdrawn plan, as if the Greenbelt simply does not exist.
Of course, these maximum development scenario's are presently just that: -scenario's. However, it is easy to see that the developers are waiting in the wings, to mop up the crosshatched areas indicated on those maps.
Similar maps in the Appendix show other areas of maximum development; together these cover an almost continuous mosaic of housing, industrial estates, etc..
Thus, the glossy green maps in the new Local Plan, are apparently designed to gloss over the reality: this Local Plan appears worse then the one withdrawn 2 years ago!
